Two years later, very little had been resolved with “the Man” in US. I was still out on bail but now was allowed to travel to Canada for periods of up to one month. It was beyond me why but the US Solicitor General still had a powerful, quite strange appetite for my urine, monthly, and wanted it so badly it was under pain of giving up my freedom. I still had one place on Malibu Beach, and I had written 12 more songs. Brian Ahern suggested we do another session and all the same players agreed to come again. Except Matt who was committed elsewhere. Brian called keyboardist Bill Payne, co-founder of Little Feat. These players are all absolute wizards, the very highest of their profession. It was an honour of a lifetime to have each one of them devote their marvelous soul to my songs about us all. Greg Leisz, Patrick Warren, Dean Parks, Jim Keltner, James “Hutch” Hutchinson, and Billy Payne. Under the watchful ear of “BA” Brian Ahern. Best gift since mom’s when I was a child.
By then I realized more completely what a treasure it was to have these players sign on again. My exposure to their capabilities and range led me to write in styles I would never have considered had I not watched them play, including between songs. Once Dean started playing the Overture to Die Fledermaus, an operetta by Johann Straus, on his Stratocaster and Bill Payne joined in on piano. They all could play whatever popped into their heads without ever looking at their fingers. So I wrote 7 more songs and we recorded 19.
